Accessing adequate dental care in the UK has become increasingly challenging for many individuals. The decline in NHS dentistry coupled with rising dental hygiene poverty has resulted in what is known as “dental deserts” across the country. Budget cuts have made it difficult for individuals to receive necessary dental health care, leading to a situation where private care is unaffordable for many. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have further exacerbated this issue, preventing people from accessing essential medical services, including NHS dentistry.

As a result of the challenges in accessing professional dental care, there has been a concerning rise in individuals resorting to DIY dentistry. A YouGov poll conducted in March 2023 revealed that one in ten Britons had taken matters into their own hands when it came to dental issues. From using household items such as cement, superglue, and heated polybeads to fix crowns and fillings to attempting tooth extractions with unconventional tools like pliers and even a dart, the lengths to which people are going to address their dental problems are alarming.

The consequences of DIY dentistry can be severe and long-lasting. Self-extractions, for example, can result in oroantral fistulas, which are abnormal tunnels between the mouth and the maxillary sinus. While smaller fistulas may heal on their own, larger ones pose a significant infection risk, requiring invasive surgery. Leaving part of the tooth or root residue in the gum can lead to infections and immune responses, requiring further oral surgery to address. DIY tooth-whitening techniques using harmful substances like hydrogen peroxide can damage tissues and increase the risk of infection, decay, and pain in the long term.

The Risks of Altered Biting Mechanics and Aesthetic Concerns

Aside from the physical risks associated with DIY dentistry, there are also concerns about how these practices can impact one’s biting mechanics and overall oral health. Altering the natural structure of teeth using nail files or other abrasive tools can weaken the protective enamel layer, leading to increased susceptibility to infections and decay. Similarly, using unregulated whitening agents can cause damage to the gums and digestive tract, resulting in serious injuries and long-term consequences.

The prevalence of DIY dentistry highlights the urgent need for increased affordable dental provision in the UK. Visiting a dentist should be a priority for anyone experiencing oral emergencies or seeking cosmetic procedures. Quick fixes and home remedies often end up costing more in the long run, both in terms of finances and health consequences. Professional dental care not only ensures proper treatment and management of dental issues but also helps prevent future complications and improve overall oral health.

The risks and consequences of DIY dentistry far outweigh any perceived benefits. It is crucial for individuals to prioritize professional dental care and seek appropriate treatment from qualified practitioners. By addressing the underlying challenges in accessing affordable dental services, the government can play a significant role in promoting better oral health outcomes for the population.
